Item #3218 A small silver-embroidered silk purse. PURSE.
A small silver-embroidered silk purse.

A small silver-embroidered silk purse. Continental Europe (Germany or France?), mid-18th century.

A small, flat bag of yellowish satin silk (maximum height and width approx. 95 x 86 mm.), each side with a different floral and arabesque design worked in silver embroidery (some overstitching in plain thread); silk cord drawstring closure. Condition: approx. 1-inch square stain on one side, silver tarnished. Provenance: from the collection of Carrie Lauer Lehman (1865-1937), by descent to current owner.***

The lovely silverwork embroidery on this slightly pear-shaped purse or pouch (of the type sometimes improperly described as an aumonière) shows on one side a sunburst motif (or a feathered crown?) above a floral and foliate design, and on the other side a large stylized flowering plant from whose six branches emerge further small sprigs.
