Hungarian neoclassicm

Carmina, e posthumis mss. pietate nepotum eius, Matthiae ac Stephani, edita. Posonius [Bratislava]: Georg Aloysius Belnay, 1804.

8vo (193 x 118 mm). 160 pp. Two engraved plates: portraits of the author and of Franciscus Barkóczy, by Sebastian Mansfeld of Vienna. Contemporary marbled sheep, smoooth spine gold-tooled in six compartments, the second with beige calf gilt lettering-piece, floral Kattunpapier endpapers (covers a bit scratched, dent in front cover). Provenance: book label of Edward John Kenney, Canadian classicist. ***

Only Edition, a posthumous collection of previously unpublished Neolatin poems by a Hungarian priest, printed in Bratislava (Pressburg), now part of Slovakia. The verses include a eulogy to the dedicatee, Franciscus (Ferenc) Barkóczy (1710-1765), archbishop of Bratislava. Edited by the author’s nephews, the edition is handsomely printed on thick paper. This copy’s contemporary binding features pretty floral block-printed endpapers.

Outside of Hungary I locate only the British Library copy. On Fába, cf. G. M. Vajda, ed., Le Tournant du siècle des Lumières 1760-1820 (1982) p. 615.
