First and only Portuguese edition of a German novel on China by an author of Italian origins with a Dutch name. It was published a year after the original German edition, which was itself issued posthumously. The author, a German of Italian descent (one of whose ancestors, a Marchese del Campo, reputedly changed his name while residing in the Netherlands), wrote a series of popular historical novels, several of which were quickly translated into other European languages. Die Gesandtschaftsreise nach China, eine Erzählung aus der letzten Hälfte des achtzehnten Jahrhunderts, the only one of his novels situated in Asia, was published in Dresden in 1825. It is a fictionalized account of George Macartney’s voyage to China in 1792-94, the first British diplomatic mission to China. This edition is rare, OCLC locating a single copy of volume I only, in the National Library of Australia. This untouched copy is preserved as issued from the press. Item #2841
